About ten years ago I wrote a tune for my jazz trio which became known as 'The Ballad'. It had no lyrics and was in response to the fact that we had no original ballads in our repertoire. Then, about five years ago, Jay Katz asks if there's a possibility of her singing one of my originals. I tell her it's a great idea, but I don't write lyrics. She says "If you do, I'll sing it". One week later the lyrics came to me all at once. Several days later we included in our set and eventually recorded it.

You said 'I did try.'
When you spoke I cried.
And then I knew
My heart was through with
Ev'ry sleepless night.
The dawn brings peaceful light.
It hurts to even try,
To try say 'Goodbye'.
Then I hear your voice in my heart
Begging not to walk away.
And then tomorrow's yesterday
When I hear you say
You don't belong right here
How I dread to hear
'Goodbye' another time.
And I cry with my reply:
'No more! Not once more!
How many times will we say goodbye?
